Altuzarra Fall/Winter 2014: New York Fashion Week

Altuzarra's Fall/Winter 2014 collection covered up the daring slits of last season in anticipation of cooler weather—high turtlenecks and oversized lapels made for seriously cozy looks. There was even a coat that brought back memories of a favorite fleecey Patagonia jacket, that is, if Patagonia was directed by a CFDA winner. But that's not to say that this season was matronly. Shoulder-baring tops, alongside plunging necklines on figure-hugging dresses, kept the Altuzarra woman comfortable and seductive, which the designer said is a central theme. Slim-fitting trousers left only a little to the imagination, and there was fringe in exactly the right places. The color palette was one we haven't seen before from the designer, with shocking fuschia and electric blue trim on heather grey and black pieces. Neon plaid fur, constructed of over 70 pieces, was shown right in the middle, perhaps signifying the apex of his experimenting with bright shades. Joseph Altuzarra's designs always invoke the image of a woman who is very much in control and carries herself with a sense of great power, but the peek-a-boo pops of fluorescent tones and oversized cover-ups suggest that she's got a soft spot for playfulness.
