Simon Jacquemus presented his spring collection in a basement-level arcade in Paris' 2nd arrondissement yesterday. There was a mob—an actual mob—outside the door that made you feel like you were elbowing your way into a record signing rather than a fashion show. Simon's fashion shows are always different. (Last season he jumped into a swimming pool.) But the point is that he has a seriously hardcore fanbase.
This collection picked up where fall left off, bringing back several Jacquemus signatures (boxy crop tops, pleated skirts) and developing some new ones in the process (bold curved lines). The mood, enhanced by flashing video games and a bleepy electro soundtrack, was happy-go-lucky vacation vibes. To put them in the right mindset, Simon's instruction to the models backstage was to walk like "you have a new boyfriend and you just ate a really good ice cream." Imagine that and you're pretty much there. Some of the models even had ice cream appliqués on their shirts. Completing the vacation hotel feel, a tennis motif also wove its way into the story, via canvas Spring Court shoes, sun visors, and a series of pieces in color-blocked white and green. The final look starred a white cut-off T-shirt printed with a wave logo and "J'Aime La Vie."
After the models completed their lap, they piled into a row of racing game cars and danced. Simon ran out to join them, and then we all made our way over to the makeshift bar to grab beers, and later some really potent Pastis, and play video games.
