Julien David's world is a magical place where cute and cool live together in harmony. Sweet but never cloying, forward but never faddy, his street wear-inspired clothing is full of little details that make you go "oh!" His spring collection, shown yesterday in Paris, was full of those moments. Titled "The Tribe of the Seven Seas," it had an obvious water-y current running through it. The opening look was a perfect example of how Julien ran with the theme: a PVC skirt in an oily petrol shade was topped with an oversized glittery blue hoodie. It was followed soon after by a long bomber jacket that featured a giant lifesaver floating on a tulle overlay. Each look was a careful combination of relaxed shape and delicate detailing. Combos that resulted in many more magic JD moments included: translucent sweaters covered in micro polka-dots (worn with the sleeves scrunched up), a silver mini dress layered under a voluminous parka, and pants printed with a pattern of sparkling pixelated fruit. As the tribe of hypercool Parisians in attendance yesterday proved, the cute plus cool formula is definitely a winner.
