BITES ON A BUDGET is a toothsome and tasty series where members of the OC family forage for great food––under $10!

Fourteenth street can be a bit of dry area when it comes to cheap and decent food, unless you count the “dining room” at Whole Foods an eatery. Rachel, Kayla, and I were pleasantly surprised when we ran into Baohaus, a Taiwanese-Chinese steamed bun spot wedged between an eyebrow threading parlor and a pizza slice shop. For a light lunch, the girls ordered two buns each: the Uncle Jesse fried tofu bao ($2.50), the Chairman pork belly bao ($2.99), the Broccolino bao ($2.75), and the Oyster Po bao ($3.99). I went for the Birdhaus fried chicken bao ($2.99) and some crunchy Taro chips topped with the Haus sauce ($3.50). Wash the flavors down with any of Baohaus' “FOB” drinks ($2.00-$2.50) and you’re ready to hit Union Square. Godspeed!

At the rear, the Broccolino bao with zha jiang bean paste, shitake mushrooms, and minced daikon. To the front, the Uncle Jesse tofu bao filled with crushed peanuts, cilantro, Haus sauce, and Taiwanese red sugar.

On the left, the Birdhaus bao: fried chicken with cilantro, crushed peanuts, and Taiwanese red sugar. To the right, the Chairman Bao: Berkshire pork belly with crushed peanuts, cilantro, Haus relish, and Taiwanese red sugar.

Front row center we have the Oyster Po bao, served with aioli, pate, pickled relish and carrots, cilantro, and jalapenos.
