"Who took the bomp?" is a question I totally forgot to ask JD Samson and Johanna Fateman of Le Tigre at Wednesday's screening of Who Took the Bomp? The documentary by Kerthy Fix played at Williamsburg's Nitehawk Cinema to a sold-out audience of the 90s riot-grrrl feminist band's mega-fans (like myself). Offering a backstage pass to the band's final tour in 2001, the film chronicles hotel gym workouts, hungover mornings, impromptu tour bus dance-offs, amazing live footage from all over the globe, and even a party rocking moment with the hardcore metal band Hatebreed!
As Kerthy pointed out in the post-screening Q&A, her work is a candid and rare look at a band from the pre-YouTube and pre-Facebook era. She also applauded the band's foresight and confidence in realizing that they were doing something important that needed to be documented. I could not agree more. So who did take the bomp from the bompalompalomp? The world may never know. But Fix's documentary brings you pretty close. Below are some of my favorite moments from the film and a few pictures of Johanna, JD, and Kerthy during the Q&A.
