Picture Perfect: The OC Color Study Jacquard

$

Remember the analog days? Between real life and photo albums, there was a lot of waiting to get your film developed. But as the OC-ism goes, good things come to those who are impatient. (The Spring-exclusive tees, for instance.) As for the rest of us, a little window shopping is never unwelcome.

And by windows, we mean the frames of a contact sheet, where negatives are lined up and reviewed. This crucial process is part of the bygone era of DIY dark room developing. Along with other things we love—Kodak, Spike Jonze’s doodles, skater belts—we revived the concept with lurex fern green and burnt orange hues, all streaked with a silver nitrate wash reminiscent of color chemicals.

Click through the slideshow to see the jacquard designs that closed the show—and bookmark them for fall!

Skate Rat NYFW Diary: Mark Gonzales At OC Fall/Winter 2015

With the oversaturated market of fashion photographers crowding into events, do the hi-res images truly have the same personal effect anymore? We decided to switch things up and peep the Opening Ceremony Fall/Winter 2015 presentation moments not through the seasoned view of a fashion editor or street style photographer, but through the eyes of a skate legend thrown into the mix.

Enter anarchic skate legend/zine-producer extraordinaire, Mark Gonzales

In addition to having his face plastered on multiple Spike Jonze photographs during the event (one of which was developed into a Fall/Winter 2015 tee now available on Spring), Gonzales also created a limited-edition zine that was available at the event. In his zine, Gonzales talks about his appreciation for his pal Jonze and goes on to say, "I started off writing things that were actual facts about Spike, but when I got to the end, I realized that the photos were the facts. What I've written here is really about my relationship with Spike. The fact is, he likes to take photographs. Plain and simple."

We figured it was The Gonz's turn to take the photos. Armed with only a Kodak disposable camera (plus an OC-Exclusive Mophie Varsity Jacket), the end results are just as raw and uncensored as you'd imagine. Who knows? Perhaps Vogue will make a move in the skater-as-fashion-documentarian direction in the future. Take note, Anna.

Vampire Or Lolita? Adam Selman X Le Specs Wants To Know

$

It’s no secret we’re fans of Adam Selman’s It-girl looks and the retro-futuristic vibes of Le Specs sunnies. So we stopped by last night’s champagne shindig at Hotel Americano in Chelsea—a welcome little break to lay (almost) horizontally and dream up deterrents for the next day’s under-eye bags with, what else? Some stunning cat-eye specs with dark and reflective lenses—all inspired by Adam’s most memorable eyewear moments in film, The Hunger meets ’62 Lolita. It was perhaps the only party where indoor sunglasses were totally acceptable, even encouraged with a few Instax snaps. Feelin’ the FOMO? Fear not, these sunglasses will be available at Opening Ceremony soon. In the meantime, pare down your Adam Selman x Le Specs must-haves with our quiz.

1. What’s your flirting technique?
A. Obvious
B. Come hither
C. Bitter

2. Who’s your spirit Rihanna?
A. Instagram-banned Bad Gal
B. Nameless duet singer
C. The nearly-nude lady who wore the most googled dress of 2014

3. Rate your brow game.
A. Brooke 4ever
B. Tilda Swinton
C. Bert from Sesame Street

4. What’s your go-to party trick?
A. An Instax camera (like the one we um, borrowed from Le Specs designer Hamish Tame)
B. A cult film
C. A discreet exit strategy

5. Pick a mode of transportation.
A. Top down, back seat
B. Exclusively by night
C. Hover vehicle

Now count up your A’s, B’s, and C’s and consult the below for our scientifically unproven rec.

A’s: Your stand-out style is lusting after after the The Last Lolita, an exaggerated cat-eye finished with cherry red and a flat, mask-like profile.

B’s: Night owl. Vampire. Whatever you’d like to call yourself, you don’t belong in the sun. So when you absolutely must, reach for The Hunger pair in black to match your outfit.

C’s: With a can’t-be-bothered attitude, you need a pair that shuts out the world. Try the The Hunger style in a pearly finish and mirror lens. Its thick temples and flat, upturned profile give the illusion of smiling, even when you’re not.

Snaps (and Adam Selman x Le Specs eyewear) on fleek! Designer Adam Selman, Michelle Salem, stylist Mel Ottenberg, and DJ Leigh Lezark pose for snaps.

Rebellion In The Schoolyard: Chloë Sevigny Spring/Summer 2015

Although actress and it-girl Chloë Sevigny's latest collaboration with Opening Ceremony was inspired by rebellion in the schoolyard, this coming-of-age collection is anything but uniform. Drawing upon satirical '80s cult film, Heathers, as well as Japanese Harajuku culture, this season Chloë explored the concepts of girlhood, femininity ,and growing up. The result? A collection of sultry and preppy pinafores, bathing suits, and suspender skirts.

From the Veronica Sawyer-esque Plaid Blazer to the ultra-athletic Tri-State Embroidered Dress, these oversized garments were built for style as well as comfort. Feminine and flirty pieces like the Kelley Check Suspender Pleated Skirt and the Walker Linen Puff Sleeve Dress are spliced in with the sporty, tomboy style of the Westburg Short Sleeve Polo Top and Polo Maxi-Dress, proving the athletic girl can also be the girly-girl. Nostalgic feels are ignited by the Patent Leather Bow Buckle Sandals, reminiscent of Jelly sandals from your childhood.

In an interview following her Fashion Week presentation earlier this year, Chloë told us she intended to "celebrate girlhood in all its optimism, discovery, awakening, awkwardness, and absurdity" through the collection—and she deserves extra credit for this one.

Skate Rat NYFW Diary: Massey Blakeman At OC Fall/Winter 2015

Among the throng of fashion insiders—and their entourage—at the Opening Ceremony Fall/Winter 2015 show, was a noticeable attendee who couldn't be seen without his skateboard the entire night.

The dude with the board is Massey Blakeman, a part-time model and full-time skater who managed to catch our attention with his laid-back vibe and nonchalant 'tude. Before the mass of A-list guests arrived, Massey Blakeman had the chance to ride through the gallery space on his handy skateboard, followed by a camera crew that continued to film throughout the eventful night. But don't get it twisted: just because Blakeman is usually the subject in front of the camera doesn't mean that he wasn't down to step back and appreciate the main man behind it.

"I like the series in the back room. I think all of Spike's photos and the clothing are really dope," says Blakeman. "I used to do stuff like that with my friends. We would try to imitate it, so it's cool to see actual raw stuff that Spike shot back-in-the-day like that."

While the chance to hang around skate legends like Mark Gonzales and BMX-pro Mat Hoffman may be the icing on the cake for some, for Blakeman, it's all about the talk of the night: Jonze's 35-milimeter archive photos.

"Seeing all of Spike's work is kind of inspiring because I'm a skater," says Blakeman. "Plus, who doesn't like all of these people pictured on the walls?"

Our thoughts exactly.

American Boys In Paris: Kenzo Men's Spring/Summer 2015

With a plethora of structured silhouettes, luxurious fabrics, and playful patterns, Kenzo's Spring/Summer 2015 men's collection tells the romantic tale of an American in France. Designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon provide insight into these countries, while exploring the duality of American and French style and culture throughout this innovative collection.

The soft palette is reminiscent of Parisian macaroons in melt-in-your-mouth cerulean, mint, and apricot hues. Subtle quirks, like the novelty stamped coin bearing the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty, reflect this "tourist" theme, as well as overtly "European" patterns like the Breton Stripe and oversized Polka Dots. Pieces like the Blocking Intarsia Striped Sweater and Z Stripes Long Sleeve Shirt feature a distorted, optical-illusion print, giving the collection a gritty graphic edge.

Carol and Humberto's knack for mish-mashing patterns is alive in the Pinstripes & Dots Paris Sweatshirt and sporty Multi Logo Cap with overlapping, choppy seasonal prints. The collection is finessed with classic menswear basics like the Formal Long Sleeve Shirt worn under stand-out patterned pieces such as the Flocked Breton Striped K Knit Sweater. The refined and daring collection whisks you away to somewhere deep in St. Tropez—ideal for the sartorial dreamer or gentleman of leisure.

How To Look Photogenic: Backstage Beauty

$

Without a doubt, there’s a kind of mystery surrounding the girls of Spike Jonze’s photographs—Chloë, Björk, Kim G.—that’s difficult, even impossible, to duplicate. But for this Fall/Winter ’15 presentation, we attempted to recreate it anyway. The result? A low-maintenance, fuss-free look that gave us plenty of time to focus on other things: in our case that was the clothes. Here, we give you a step-by-step DIY guide to get this exclusive backstage style—including a hair technique to stow in your bag of tricks! While we can’t promise a movie deal or a Top 40 hit will follow, you’ll have the confidence to try.

STEP 1: Give Me Some Skin
Begin with a mega clean slate by swabbing your skin with a saturated cotton pad of Dermaclear Micro Water from Dr.Jart+. It removes everything in one easy, lazy go. Do that and you’ll have time for a mask—the real difference-maker. We like the Pore Minimalist Mask formulated with Korean charcoal. Then seal it all in with a moisturizer like the skin-plumping Ceramidin Liquid.

STEP 2: Swoop-a-Loop
So all that goodness really sinks in before make-up, hair is next. Start with a little dollop of Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil to add shine and press down any flyaways. Then style! Our hair guru, Anthony Turner, went for a deep side part reminiscent of ‘90s It girls. The trick? Take the front-most pieces and pull ‘em taut with a discreet little knot at the nape of the neck, then assault your handiwork with Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray.

STEP 3: Doll Up
Because we had to show off that camera-ready complexion and strong hairstyle we left the makeup subdued and focused on a rosy flush: peachy-pink blush and a sheer sweep of apricot eyeshadow. (We like Maybelline’s Color Tattoo Gel Shadow in “Fierce and Tangy” for it’s staying power.) Just dab and blend, blend, blend. For the cheeks, go for the Mineral Powder Illuminator in peach for dewy, just-pinched skin in any light—from the unforgiving spotlights and flashes to the golden hour.

STEP 4: Frame It
Since we kept the look simple we went ham on the nails. Enlisting the help of OC-friend Naomi Yasuda from CND Nails, we recreated the collection’s Kodak prints and photo collages in classic, square-shaped silhouettes. The DIY kicker? These intricately striped, photo-printed masterpieces stick on in a flash—all perfect for showtime jitters and real-life impatience alike. Photos by Matthew Kelly and Greg KesslerEnlisting the help of OC-friend Naomi Yasuda from CND Nails, we recreated the collection’s Kodak prints and photo collages in classic, square-shaped silhouettes. Because we had to show off that camera-ready complexion and strong hairstyle we left the makeup subdued and focused on a rosy flush: peachy-pink blush and a sheer sweep of apricot eyeshadow.Dr

About That Time Beastie Boys Met Spike Jonze

If you haven't been living under an iconic-music-video-deprived rock for the past twenty-five years (or if you've been checking up on our Opening Ceremony Fall/Winter 2015 coverage), you already know that everyone loves Spike Jonze. In addition to having his archive 35-milimeter photos turned into a collection, the man has directed everyone from Björk to Christopher Walken in a wide-variety of music videos.

Below, an excerpt from skate legend/zine-extraordinaire Mark Gonzale's limited-edition zine that he created exclusively for the OC Fall/Winter show, where he talks to Beastie Boys member Mike Diamond about chillin' with Spike back in the day.

A recent phone call between American professional skateboarder and artist Mark Gonzales (aka “The Gonz”) and founding member of the Beastie Boys, Mike Diamond (aka “Mike D”). The subject? Their longtime friend, Spike Jonze.

MARK GONZALES: When I saw the music video that Spike [Jonze] made for “Sabotage,” I was just blown away. When you guys were filming in different spots and stuff, what was that like? Did you guys have security or was it low-key, like how he and I shot Video Days?

MIKE DIAMOND: I wasn’t around when you guys were doing the Blind: Video Days stuff, but the music video for “Sabotage,” we did it all. That’s why I kind of think we worked well with Spike, because it wasn’t like we were trying to make something super legit. Back in the ‘90s, we had these loose permits and we ran around LA, and if we had done it properly, we would have had the fire department involved.

MG: Who was in charge of the locations? It was really awesome; I liked all the spots.

MD: We free-styled. A lot of the locations were close to Spike’s Hollywood production office, and then a bunch was close to where we were living in Los Feliz.

MG: It seemed like it was a lot of fun. When you watch that video, it’s like, “Wow, these kids…”

MD: That’s what I mean. We didn’t really have enough money to shoot at real locations, so it had to be stuff that we had access to.

MG: And when you guys worked with Spike, or you would see him around, what did you think of his dressing style? Did he dress like the younger crowd on the East Coast?

MD: This doesn’t exactly answer your question, but it’s okay. What was cool about Spike is that whatever we were working on, he would dress the part. For the “Sabotage” video, if we were dressed up like undercover cops, he joined in. For the “Sure Shot” video, we wore black ties, and he would also kind of dress it up, too. It was awesome.

MG: I know—he inspires me with certain things. It can be as simple as thinking, That is a cool little thing he does; I’m going to pick that up or copy that. I also liked his sense of travel. Before, when we would do skate demos in different countries, I would bring a lot of boards, or kneepads, and it got to be so heavy. Then I saw his style of traveling light, and I realized I liked that—that’s a good

NYFW Model Diary: OC's Alex Lee At 69

69 is known for creating unconventional clothes. This season’s presentation-meets-gallery-opening followed suit: giant denim pieces backdropped denim-clad models who circled a crowded gallery space on the West Side. Here, OCNY’s (and XXBC designer) Alex Lee recounts the event from the inside—as a model outfitted in what he calls a “hater-blocker”—including a few cameos from OC’s extended fam.

It was set in an art gallery and set up like a gallery opening. The walls were stripped bare, models wore the art on their backs, and show-goers had free reign to as much flash photography as they pleased. It was the 69 show, at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise in the West Village, and it was the chillest fashion show we had ever been to.

Will Thompson (the other half of XXBC) met the designer of 69 (who has managed to remain relatively anonymous, despite absolutely owning the denim game since 2011) at OC about a year ago. Since then, he’s accumulated an impressive collection of some of the brand’s swaggiest garments. When we caught wind that the LA-based label was planning its first show in New York and looking for models, Will and I agreed that we had to be a part of that shit!

I wore this roomy denim onesie with a really long neck that doubled as a hood/hater-blocker. I decided to wear it as a turtleneck since the room was full of cool people and very few haters. I didn’t really look in a mirror after I put it on, but I’m pretty sure I looked like a wizard, a baby with an eerily advanced sense of style, or a flying squirrel—all good options. Will managed to snag a white denim hooded zip-up jacket and some simple (by 69’s standards) denim trousers. He paired it with a denim belt that looked like something you’d wear for a third-grade game of capture the flag. He also donned a chunky knit denim beanie. Yeah, knit denim.

After we dressed and helped steam some of the clothing backstage, we were simply instructed to “mingle.” So mingle we did. The models were friends of 69 or friends of friends of 69. Some of the models were even designers themselves, like Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta of Eckhaus Latta and Gerlan Marcel of Gerlan Jeans. The gigantic denim button-up display provided plenty of Kodak moments for the models and guests, along with a braided denim kimono that further blurred the line between art and clothing.

The thing about 69 is that it’s super versatile and looks good on just about anyone. That’s not only a testament to the broad appeal of the denim fabric, but it also proves how well our anonymous friend at 69 has managed to create this truly universal, truly unisex and truly non-demographic clothing line that anyone can wear and everyone can appreciate. The number of styles on display—the so widely varied manipulation of such a familiar fabric—was so impressive and inspirational. Yep, I said it: I was inspired!

I’m honored to have been a part of the 69 show. It’s a brand I really believe in—one I can stand behind wholeheartedly. It’s made in the USA, it’s super unique and artful, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously."I wore this roomy denim onesie with a really long neck that doubled as a hood/hater-blocker," says Alex. Photos by Alex LeeWilliam Thompson

If you’ve been keeping up with our NYFW coverage, chances are you’re already squared off on the presentation, and inspiration, behind the Opening Ceremony Fall/Winter 2015 collection. In the second part of the behind-the-scenes video from Lexus, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon divulge on the process behind turning Sonic Youth photos into elegant jacquards and skate tricks into warped prints.

The pair also get personal while discussing their nerves before the show—namely before presenting the collection pieces to their pal Spike Jonze for the first time. Reasonable enough, considering pieces from the collection feature photos from Jonze's 35-milimeter archive. “It's super exciting to tell this intimate story between two friends,” says Leon.

Watch the video above to see Jonze's initial reaction to the collection—hint: he's "so giddy right now"—and find out why OC continues to be the go-to company for daring fashion concepts.

“I think the stakes are always the same,” says Lim. “We want to create something that people want.

Skate Rat NYFW Diary: William Strobeck At OC Fall/Winter 2015

Spike Jonze may have been the man of the night during the Opening Ceremony Fall/Winter 2015 show, but there's another dude behind the lens that's managed to capture lo-fi, uncencosored footage of the honorary skateboard-centric filmmaker before him.

William Strobeck has become a household name in the skate world—although when you first meet him, he might jokingly deny his existence and tell you his name is in fact Will Smith. (Reporter's note: Thanks for the insane Googling session, Will!) When he's not directing skate videos for Supreme, he's hosting a who's-who of the downtown world with impromptu photo shoots in his own household. Seriously, who doesn't want to chill with the likes of Alex Olson, Brianna Capozzi, and this guy?

With his candid, raw shooting style that echoes the very era Jonze made his name in, Strobeck is a man who's all about taking from the past to move forward. "I grew up looking at magazines and [his photos] were in magazines at the time," says Strobeck. "I’m just so nostalgic when I see it now."

Let the nostalgia sink in and allow Strobeck's event coverage photos take you back to the lo-fi days of skate photography—when it was less about giving a fuck and more about chilling with the homies.

"Skateboarding was really fun back then and in [Spike's] photos it looks like they’re goofing around and having fun," says Strobeck. "That’s what I kind of try to do today with kids and it’s a way different ball game. Spike captured a good time in that world."

Charmingly Distorted: J.W. Anderson Women's Spring/Summer 2015

Jacques Tati's pivotal 1967 film Playtime recounts the story of a disorientated American exploring the futuristic landscapes of Paris for the first time. So it comes as no surprise that J.W. Anderson's charmingly distorted Spring/Summer 2015 collection pays homage to the absurdist French filmmaker. Fitted with asymmetrical slits and distinctive knots in relaxed silhouettes, Anderson challenges our sense of "balance" to create a unique collection of sophisticated and peculiar garments.

Blending the elegance of Elizabeth Taylor with the insolence of Jane Birkin, the collection features stand-out pieces such as the Apron Band Dress and Knot Jersey Skirt—which exhibit Anderson's fetish for incorporating a little "sex" into his designs. Nineteen-sixties mod-esque basics like the Classic Shirt and Trousers are updated with knotted panels, adding to the effortless, business casual appeal of this collection. In addition to these refreshing ready-to-wear pieces, the signature avant-garde J.W. Moon Bag makes a comeback in classic, slick-black leather.

Although the collection was created with the French bourgeois in mind, you don't have to be in Versailles to rock these super-wearable garments.

In case you haven’t checked the weather forecasts, the east coast is looking pretty… white-washed. And while #Blizzardof2015 wasn't quite the storm of the century, much of New York City took a snow day and are inside, keeping warm by their clunky steam-heated radiators and their stockpile of Whole Foods, aka "New York's hottest club."

What better way to get that much-needed boost in spirit than with some bright, sunny, Art Deco-inspired prints? Roksanda Ilincic knows the answer: nothing.

That’s right. For Resort, the London-based, Serbian fashion designer has treated us with an Easter egg-colored collection, just the thing to offset the bleak, monochromatic conditions outside. Known for creating the standout cocktail dress, the fit-and-flare sheaths and sculptural silhouettes are perfection for your spring dance card. Think that upcoming wedding at The Breakers, the knowing 9-to-5, or your next guest spot on "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon (the Allis Sleeveless, with its spearmint-green peekaboo panel, and Harland Dress are our favorites).

The Folks At +Pool Did Something Big—And They Weren't Even Asked To

Every month the Ace Hotel in New York displays a new exhibit in the gallery space right outside of our Opening Ceremony Ace location. This month’s installation, Doing Something Big When No One Asks You To Do Something Big, is particularly fascinating. It’s a retrospective based on the four years of research and development that went into creating + Pool—the world’s first filtered floating pool, set to be built in the East River.

Our very own Carol Lim and Humberto Leon co-hosted their first Annual Swim Benefit at Jane’s Carousel in October 2013. We sat down and asked the people behind + Pool a couple of questions about their project.

RILEY GALLAGHER: Just by reading all that went into the four years that got you to this gallery show today, what would you say has been the most difficult part of creating + Pool?

+ POOL: There hasn’t really been a hard part; I mean it’s all hard. There’s just a lot of it. Nothing has been painfully difficult as of yet; it’s just more of a process.

What has been the most rewarding experience thus far?
We jumped into the river this summer. After testing for months, jumping in clean water was huge. It was the first time that any of us had swum in the river.

It never ceases to amaze us how amazing the project can be and it rewards us on many different levels. The Gala was also amazing.; it was our first live fundraiser and it was the first time we had all of our supporters in one group. We had Olympic medalists, artists, architects, designers, politicians, swimmers, and kids. I don’t know if I’m missing anyone but it was really amazing to see everyone in one place and it’s always rewarding to interact with them on such a personal level.

This one day, a very young girl just called our office and asked, “What time does the pool open tomorrow?” because she had seen an image of it at the park. We were like “ahhhh, I’m so sorry it’s at least a few more years away.” It was super disappointing, but in the background you could hear her dad or someone giggling. We were like “that’s so mean,” but overall these individual interactions are always nice. The rewarding experiences range from this grand public scale to small intimate moments. It’s all rewarding.

How exactly did you get this beautiful and depictive drawing straight onto the wall of the gallery?
We did a small draft drawing, the kind of bones of it, and projected that in chunks on the wall. Four of us took a bunch of Sharpies and just basically traced it and then filled in all the detail afterward. One of the tricky things was all of the thought bubbles Archie had to do ahead of time because all of that stuff would go over all of the drawing. All of the details and fun pictures and everything were freehanded afterward. How often do you get to just doodle on the walls? We were actually surprised it looked so consistent with four different people drawing everything.

Cleaning the East River must feel like a daunting task, so it makes sense that you’re starting small. How long (time wise) does it take to filter the river water into a swimmable condition?
We can force it through as fast as we want or we can let the river just filter through at its own pace. Right now we’re cleaning the entire pool every 6 h
