U.T.O.P.I.A.: The Parlá Brothers at Colette

If you are in Paris these days, be sure to take in the Parlá brothers' exhibition that recently opened at Colette, PARLÁ FRÈRES: U.T.O.P.I.A. José and Rey both possess unique styles––José's background in painting informs his work, which ranges from simple calligraphy to poster collage, sculpture, and installations; while Rey is known for his experimental films in Miami Beach during the 90s. Here, the brothers have collaborated to create a series of abstract and vivid works.

Says Rey about the show, "This is the first time José and I were able to spend time together in the studio and create works born out of years of conversation. I've been documenting José and our friends since our early teenage childhood, starting in 1983, out in Miami and throughout the East coast. This is a unique exhibition of two artist brothers showing their works and overall original and individual visual sensibilities, through different mediums that we took up as kids." As for the title of the show? "It's an acronym we came up with," says Rey, "Based on a dream José had and the title of another painting that our family owns: U.T.O.P.I.A. Underground Traveling Operating Psycho-geographical Intelligence Agency––that's the idea."
