Fine Wine: Happy Birthday, Roman Polanski!

After losing his mother to the concentration camps of Auschwitz, Polanski rode out World War II, separated from his father, in the Kraków Ghetto. Always fascinated with cinema, Polanski attended film school in Poland and directed his first feature-length film, Knife in the Water, in 1962. After that came Repulsion with Catherine Deneuve, Cul-de-Sac, and The Fearless Vampire Killers/Dance of the Vampires—where he met the spectacular Sharon Tate. Theirs was a romance the whole world envied and their wedding, a fashion moment (the bows and that cravat!). From the darkness of her death, Polanski rose to direct three of the greatest films of all time: Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown, and The Pianist. Tomorrow is Polanski’s birthday, wherever he is in the world, we hope he has a happy one.
