Warm Up 2012: Howse, Autre Ne Veut, Storm Queen, Photek, and Shlohmo

Another summer weekend, another Warm Up—though that is not to say that this past Saturday at PS1 was anything lackluster. Howse (based in my hometown of Providence!) got down before a four-piece Autre Ne Veut took to the stage with stunning feminine vocals, surprising everyone with their blend of enigmatic poise and twisted dance moves. Later, Morgan Geist as Storm Queen played an extensive set of almost two hours, and by the time Photek stepped into the DJ booth, the courtyard was packed.

Even though technical difficulties delayed Photek’s set 'til nightfall, this was likely for the best: his sounds were cast in the purple and pink iridescence of the stage lighting and in the thrashing crowd that had awaited his performance all day. My favorite part was probably Shlohmo’s set for his decelerated covers of TLC’s theme song for All That and Huey's "Pop, Lock & Drop It." It that had me sharing that fleeting concert-going kinship with those around me. I felt it most when Shlohmo transitioned from Aaliyah’s "Are You That Somebody" into his own (and my favorite of his tracks) “Wen uuu,” and finally ended the set with DJ Sliink and some good old Trap. As always, Wendy flirted with the crowd with her erratic water spouts and M.Wells served up some head cheese.
