Bieber & Microwaves: Nicolas Lobo at Marlborough

Walking into Gum, dropped, Nicolas Lobo's current exhibition at Marlborough Chelsea, it's hard not to be struck by the show's blaring soundtrack.

The song, created by Romanian programmer Paul Octavian Nasca, stretches and slows down Justin Bieber's "U Smile" by 800 percent. The Gregorian chant-like track had unexpectedly become a YouTube hit, and here it acts as a fourteen minute-long accompaniment to Lobo's video, Grape Syrup Action for Paul Octavian Nascara's 'U Smile 800% Slower.' In the video, a masked figure spray paints grape cough syrup onto white walls. The altered track paired with the act of altering the wall, it seems, couldn't be more appropriate.

In the opposite room, phone-sex hotline numbers are cut into marble and granite, aligning the phone-sex industry with a sense of permanence contrary to its nature. Throughout the show, the artist plays with the ideas of distortion and permanence in the context of a technological world (Lobo even microwaved CDs in one piece). See it before it closes on January 14, 2012.
