On Thursday, talented photographer and friend of OC Max Farago's show Disconnect opened in Buenos Aires. We dispatched another BsAs buddy of ours, Alina Perkins, to scope it out and talk to Max about photography, new spots in the Argentinean capital, 2012, and more.
Alina Perkins: Why "Disconnect"?
Max Farago: I am working with the relationships between images to express a feeling of disconnectedness––groundlessness. The photos in the show have nothing in common in terms of subject matter or composition.
AP: Your pictures make me feel that the world is a magic drawer, full of secret things and situations. They also have this warm feel to them. What seduces you into taking a picture?
MF: I try to listen to my instincts. I usually make more interesting pictures before I have thought too much. Sometimes I just get this feeling that I should take a picture, and so I do. Every once in a while, the picture is good.
AP: You make nature look sexy and mysterious, and it’s amazing how you fuse Clara [your girlfriend] into that savage world of beauty. There is also a lot of biting humor, like a romantic, slow song with a punk chorus.
MF: That is another element of the title Disconnect. For a long time, I was interested in what Cartier-Bresson called the "decisive moment," then I became more interested in indecisive moments. I like the space and silence that appear when things clash. And humor of course.
AP: Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
MF: I hope that I am calmer, and that I spend more time in nature and the ocean. In terms of work, I am unsure.
AP: What further ambitions do you have in the fashion world?
MF: I hope that whatever I do, I do well.
AP: What is the most ridiculous thing about being human?
MF: That we are all going to die.
AP: You come to Argentina every year, what new things have you discovered this time?
MF: A ping pong place on Avenida Corrientes, the restaurant Albamonte, and SlyZmud art gallery.
AP: I hear you're working on a book…
MF: Yes, I am hoping to publish a book this year. I have too many pictures that I want to put behind me.
AP: What are your plans for 2012?
MF: 2012. Year of the Dragon. I am pretty sure it is going to be a good one.
