“Girl’s got balls” was my first thought when I laid eyes on the works in Andrea Mary Marshall’s solo exhibition, "Toxic Women," at LaViola Gallery. Why, you ask? Well, for starters, one slice of her six-piece exhibition is a masturbatory porno video, starring herself. Then there are her self-portrait photographs, which feature her donning nothing but a red wig and sunglasses, with numerous cigarettes in her mouth, bleeding from either her eyes or gashes in her palms.
Other pieces on display include reinterpreted Vogue covers, large scale canvases depicting barbaric female figures, and several Louis Vuitton bag sculptures bearing handwritten confessions. Ultimately, Andrea is exposing the paradoxes that exist within society's concept of the "ideal woman." After the show, I was lucky enough to ask Andrea some questions about the usual girl things, you know, sex tapes, demons, and toxic women.
Rachel Hodin: First thing's first, congrats on your recent show, I really enjoyed it!
Andrea Mary Marshall: Thank you so much! Thank you for coming to the opening!
RH: You seem to have already established an aesthetic for yourself at such a young age. Where does you interest in the "ideal woman" come from?
AMM: Street walking.
RH: Do you know the women who are represented in you work, or are they fictional characters?
AMM: I know all the women in the show, intimately. One person's reality is another person's fiction.
RH: I hear there's a sex tape hidden inside one of the Louis Vuitton bag sculptures, true story?
AMM: Don't believe everything you hear, but listen carefully.
RH: If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?
AMM: Lucas Cranach, Matisse, Francis Bacon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Yves Saint Laurent, and Richard Prince.
RH: Have you ever been victim to the toxic woman?
AMM: Who hasn't.
RH: After finishing a piece, how do you feel?
AMM: I am filled with anxiety.
