Rather than dropping in on Norma Kamali at her home, Christelle and I figured it was more likely that we would catch her at Physique 57, where she tones and flexes on the daily. Norma totally showed us all up with her seemingly endless energy (and flexibility)—the perfect way to conclude part one of our House Calls editorial. Part two comes next week!

Daria Radlinski: What was your first job?

Norma Kamali: In my father's candy store. We had a soda fountain and it was a real late 50s soda fountain! It was near a park with a pool so it was a super popular place. I drove my father crazy arranging the candy bars by color and size and displaying anything and everything in a very special way.

DR: What do you never leave home without?
NK: My iPhone!

DR: How long have you been coming to Physique 57 and what is your favorite thing about it?
NK: For 3 and a half years, daily. It's so challenging—I never like anything easy.

DR: What's your secret to staying young?
NK: The objective is not to stay young. You can't change the aging process and, in fact, it has many benefits. I want to be as healthy as possible so, whatever my genetic disposition is, I can be in the best condition to take on the challenge. Living a full life means staying healthy and that goes for everyone, at any age.

DR: In a past life you were:
NK: Wow! I would love to have been Leonardo Da Vinci or Michelangelo!

DR: Fill in the blanks:
NK: I like my   reality   but I love my   dreams  .

DR: Do you have a lucky charm?
NK: My guy!

DR: What song will you always love?
NK: "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett

DR: If you were going to be in a band, who would you want to be your band mates?
NK: Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Winwood, and Jimi Hendrix.

DR: Best piece of advice you've ever received?
NK: "Know thyself," from my 6th grade teacher.

DR: What is your virtue?
NK: Love, pioneering, and invention.

DR: What is your vice?
NK: Love, pioneering, and invention.

DR: Any summer plans?
NK: Dream big dreams and work on making them come true…. at the beach of course!
