14 Paintings: Richard Prince at 303 Gallery

It's been a while––almost 30 years to be exact––since Richard Prince lived in the back room of 303 Gallery on Park Avenue South (true story). And it's safe to say that both Prince and 303 have both done pretty darn well for themselves in the art world today. The artist, who's been called a "pirate-painter" for appropriating everyone from Picasso to Sherri Levine and essentially painting over them, is best known for his caricaturesque and pop culture/media icon-heavy works. But his newest show at his former crash pad, 14 Paintings, has a different vibe that's far more abstract than his works from recent memory (like, say the controversial Brookie Shields painting that was banned from the Tate).

Made only of rubber band, staples, acrylic, and newspaper, his serene pieces show polygonal black shapes against white backgrounds. The works are simple but exhibit a certain vastness. "Want to free yourself from experience? Don't pay any attention to it," Prince writes in a series of aphorisms that make up the show's press release. The show is worth checking out for Prince's poem alone.

Through June 22.
