Already assembled within the permanent collections of MoMA, Guggenheim, and the Tate Modern, Cuban collective Los Capinteros (consisting of Marco Castillo and Dagoberto Rodríguez) are currently exhibiting three installations at the Faena Art Center in Buenos Aires.
These large-scale pieces—an aircraft, a jumble of houses, and site-specific, floor-to-ceiling lampposts—while uniquely different in their approach and use of materials all comment on the pitfalls of an energetic modern civilization. The large vintage aircraft, Avião, quite literally alludes to man's conquest of the sky and space: the underside of its broad wings and cabin are like a pincushion, pierced with hundreds of wooden arrows. This is an elegant reenactment demonstrating the fear and wild mythology that must have circled many remote tribes when air travel was first invented. Piled in the opposite corner are several wooden block houses. Their chaotic, precarious arrangement offers commentary on the structure of urban development. As does Alumbrado Público, a floor-to-ceiling structure of city lampposts with twisted, intertwined roots. These often botched constructions are the result of an urban sprawl on steroids.
Through August 12th, 2012.
