Plexi-Origami: Berta Fischer at James Fuentes

On Wednesday, the Berlin-based artist Berta Fischer officially debuted her work in the US, in a show at the Lower East Side's James Fuentes gallery. Some of the works, molded from fluorescent Plexiglas, could be oversized neon candy wrappers; others, like the perforated curtain Kalidea, a phosphorescent aquatic plant. Viewed from different angles, the contours of the compositions become incendiary. This is not due to any lighting effect, but simply to the nature of the material. Another fun fact about the works: their shapes are defined in only a handful of minutes while the plastic cools and hardens into shape. The result is an exhibition of synthetic appeal that offers up a flickering buffet for optical pleasure-seekers.
