With the Opening Ceremony Fall/Winter 2015 footwear collection, luxe-heels can be added to the checklist of skater cool points.
This season, Opening Ceremony took inspiration from Spike Jonze’s archival 35mm film photos, a great deal of which feature early sequence shots of skate legends such as Mark Gonzales (along with a whole slew of pals from the Video Days era) landing tricks on the streets of LA. The influence of these early days in Spike’s career is evident in subtle ways throughout the collection. Take the Zan Shiny Leather Booties, for example, which feature a wide double tongue and are inspired by the innovative ways that some of these iconic skateboarders wore their sneakers—think fat shoe tongues without laces. Another iconic and functional style well-known within the skater community involves tucking the legs of baggy pants into socks to prevent disruption while landing casper flips. Opening Ceremony founder Humberto Leon took notice of this ribbed sock convenience and details on the heels of the Platform Zip Boots mimic the subtle ridges of the socks.
