The other night, The Total Look, a new show on the Mod fashion movement, opened at the MOCA Pacific Design Center. The exhibit showcases the work of three forces from the swinging 60s: that of fashion designer Rudi Gernreich, the fashion photographer William Claxton, and their model/muse Peggy Moffitt (that black-bowled pixie who defined Mod at its height––and also happens to be Bill's wife). Peggy was there in person, looking as glamorous as ever. She showed up in a trompe l'oeil knit onesie made to look like an overall set, and topped everyone as far as fashion was concerned. Runners-up were the four ladies in full Gernreich attire.
The show itself was amazing too. Iconic photographs of Peggy wearing the best of Rudi Gernreich—the monokini, flowing caftans, and kooky accessories that pushed the boundaries of fashion—fill the walls. The images snake around a good fifty mannequins, each decked out in original Gernreich creations, from Mod safari dresses to complete optical suiting, in addition to mind-blowing dresses made of velvet fur and plastic. The pieces were from Peggy's personal collection and Decades on Melrose, and all of the looks left not stars but incredible Op Art patterns in my eyes for the rest of the night!
Show's up through May 20th, ch-check it! It's really fun, and it'll make you wish you had bought that crazy patterned knit shirt at the thrift store the other day.
