Is There An Art To The Selfie? Jeanette Hayes Thinks So

"Come On Barbie, Let’s Go Party"—RIP from Jeanette’s tumblr—comes to mind when you spot the bleach-blonde OC friend, collaborator, and artist Jeanette Hayes, who premiered her 30-minute video compilation This American Life last night in the Meatpacking District. The series of Vimeo clips, Instagram photos, and iPhone snaps mixed traditional religious imagery with the polymath's infamous pucker-faced selfie to bring together a surreal, yet intimate, retrospect of our cyber-voyeuristic psyche.

“I have so many close friends from Instagram that I only met for the first time in real life tonight,” Hayes told Opening Ceremony at the reception. Hayes, like her art, brings together what first seems like fleeting random moments to fuse a thematic sense of community. From crashing monster trucks to late-night debauchery, the playful babe left both traditional art seekers and modernists wondering, “Turn down for what?”

In this series, Hayes links current events, classic art, and anime favorites with her own life and influencers to create a multimedia experience you just can’t shake. And obviously, the pop princess didn’t forget to include a mastermix of hip-hop beats that you'll want to Spotify as the mixtape of our lives (which would make up for the fact that we weren’t actually with her practicing the perfect come-hither with Kim K in the background. Well, almost). Come check it out for yourself: The video will be on continuous 24/7 loop at Ellie Rines’ gallery, 55 Gansevoort, which has showed other OC friends such as Leo Fitzpatrick and Dylan Bailey.
