OC x NYFW: Band of Outsiders FW12

Any show that begins with a Mexican wedding cookie from Momofuku bakery is off to an excellent start. The second taster of what was to come? A soundtrack that brought to mind an outlaw returning to a one-street town or blowing through saloon doors. As a black curtain parted to reveal a backdrop of rocky desert spires, the outbreak of whispers made the atmosphere more like the excited hush before a theatre performance.

Striding offstage and through the audience, male models wore sun-bleached denim, khaki suiting, and corduroy jackets, faces glowering out from under floppy wide-brim hats. This was no straight costume drama, though. Bringing the mood firmly into the here and now, Scott Sternberg added puffer vests and matching sets of striped pajamas.

As the final men's look—a Zorro-esque get-up complete with a billowing black trench coat—walked into the distance, the air lifted with a stream of sweeping dresses in barely-there florals. Sheer ruffled layers of calico prints, topped with fur and shearling, kept the Western spirit alive. Finale pieces with high collars and diamonds at the neck, or in lengths of black tuxedo silk, were a fittingly cinematic end to a collection that thrilled with its scope and maverick sense of adventure.
