Bites on a Budget: £4.45 at Herman Ze German

BITES ON A BUDGET is a toothsome and tasty series where members of the OC family forage for great food––under $10!

They say never to judge a book by its cover—nor a restaurant by its name—but admittedly the reason I tried Soho sausage joint Herman Ze German is because I found its name and slogan "our wurst is ze best!" pretty amusing. Just a stone's throw away from Opening Ceremony London, the authentic German hot dog house has since become a winter time weekly treat.

The traditional sausages, from bratwurst to bockwurst, are imported directly from Germany and served up coated in crispy onions and sauerkraut. On a recent lunchtime, I went for the staple—the Bratwurst Wurst Roll (£4.45), or pork and veal sausage with all the sauce and trimmings. OC London's AARON chose the Wilde Bock Roll (£5.75) stuffed with bockworst, pommes frites, curry sauce, and heaps of mayonnaise––in other words, the Big Mac of Herman Ze German. Other tempting options included the chicken or pork Schnitzel Roll with lettuce and tartar sauce (£7.25), and Currywurst with seasoned pommes or in a roll (£5.00). It's the best of the wurst, and must be tried!
