When you develop signature styles, it's the materials that matter, which is something that JULIEN DAVID''s Fall/Winter 2014 collection takes to heart. Although the inspirations and influences may change, his designs are always about finding new, unique textiles. Julien started his line in Tokyo making hand-dyed silk scarves, and his penchant for bringing out the best in fabric was never more apparent than in this darker-than-usual collection, which began in textured shades of black and white. The hues picked up by the end, where we were treated to Keith Haring-esque paintstroke prints and glorious gradients of tinsel-like pieces, made with yards and yards of metallic thread. By using long, comfortable lines and a delicate mixture of sheer and opaque, carried over from previous seasons, the designer let us know that despite the dearth of prints, it's still Julien. Backwards snapbacks appeared on models' heads, paired with bomber jacket remixes and platform oxfords that make the simple silhouettes street-style ready. After a few seasons of fun, bright colors and patterns, this collection was much more demure, but it just made Julien's attention to detail—from the furry texture on a swing skirt to the pop of green horn buttons on a duffle coat—stand out even more.
