Hairstylist and OC columnist Sloane Sera reports live from Fashion Week!
Deep down in every hairdressers kit is a lonely crimper. As you would expect, it hasn't been used much since the 1980s. I have suggested it on shoots and have repeatedly watched art directors and photographers cringe, not realizing it is a great tool for building cool texture. But this New York Fashion Week, the crimper was used as the secret weapon to create the big texture in the models' ponytails at the Pamela Love FW12 presentation. The look was created by my good friend Jordan M., who shared with me his notes and Polaroids from the pre-show hair test. He also invited me to join him and the Bumble and bumble team to do some hair. Check it out!

Jordan's tools... and there's the crimper.
Jordan is building the texture with lots of layers of products. He has already put in Bumble and bumble's Styling Creme, Thickening Spray, Hair Powder and Brilliantine. It sounds like a lot, so if you wanna try this at home, maybe just choose two of the products.

He added hair extensions, not really for length but to make the ponytails bigger and larger than life. After that, he grabbed random pieces, crimped them, and flat-ironed others so the texture was varied, adding Brilliantine to melt the textures together and separate them at the same time.
