This past July, UK native L-Vis 1990 (real name James Connolly) cranked MOMA PS1’S WARM UP series to a full blown F I R E. I spent most Saturdays last summer working up a serious sweat at the Long Island City dance parties, and can say with certainty that James' beats for Kelela were perhaps the most memorable set of the summer. In addition to his top-notch Warm Up work, the Night Slugs co-founder is also an OC Mixtape alum; so when the time came to decide who best to score our Fall/Winter 2014 runway show on Sunday, we looked no further than the mix master.
I caught up with James about his OC Fall/Winter 2014 soundtrack; check out our chat and the jams below!
Emily Manning: You’re really no stranger to teamwork: both Night Slugs and Fade to Mind are super collaborative in nature, and you even have a specific cross-collective project with Massacooramaan called Visacoor. What was it like working with Carol and Humberto?
I only found out about this project two weeks ago so the collaboration process has been super accelerated but fun and challenging! The new collection has been really inspiring to me; I have loved trying to translate it into musical form. It has been a real pleasure working with Carol and Humberto.
What was the idea behind your set Sunday night? What sorts of things have you been listening to recently?
This year's theme is Belgium so I've been kinda emerging myself in New Beat, an amazing form of club music from Belgium in the late 80s. It's like slowed down acid house with an industrial EBM edge. I'm obsessed! The music for this show is heavily influenced by that era.
What else is keeping you occupied this fashion week? Are you attending any shows, and if so, which are you most excited to see?
I wish I had time to check out other stuff. I've been working nonstop on this project; I even had to work on my 30th birthday! But if I had time, I would definitely check out the HBA, Telfar and Luar Zepol shows.
