Highland Fall/Winter 2014: New York Fashion Week

Just prior to Brooklyn-based menswear brand Highland's Fall/Winter 2014 presentation at Milk Studios, the last post on their Facebook page was hashtagged #keepHighlandweird. After having a rubber globe ball thrown at me by one of the not-so-stoic models, I’d say mission accomplished. Highland co-founders and cousins Lizzie Owens and Cramer Tolboe’s past presentations have perfectly recreated weightlifting club backrooms and hazy college hangouts, nailing every detail down to the Doritos, yet this season’s set was comparatively sparse. The models stood on elevated platforms and interacted with various weather instruments, an active nod to the collection’s overarching theme of climate change and the urban environment. Featuring far more technical outerwear construction than in seasons past, the Highland dude was treated to convertible zip-off hoods and sleeves, mesh-lined layers, and the brand's signature uneven hems. Although this collection gestures towards a more grown up guy, Highland's consistent focuses on youth and freedom remain evident.
