Eckhaus Latta Fall/Winter 2014: New York Fashion Week

“Safe word? Royal jelly/ a straw in the apiary/ Most places come undone; remember you were made to be used.” One would think the stanza lifted from the volumes of Sharon Olds, but the quietly jarring series of images are pulled straight from Eckhaus Latta’s poetic press release for their Fall/Winter 2014 collection shown last night at the Standard Hotel. Although presented without any context or explained connection to the clothing, the beautifully rendered and emotionally honest bookending text certainly serves as written parallel to Zoe Latta and Mike Eckhaus' fifth collection together.

Often renowned for the masterful employment of diverse textilespast seasons have seen the use of Moroccan rugs and elastic mohairthe pair's efforts this collection were no different. Utilizing goat mohair upholstery velvet, military surplus blankets, and distressed double face wool, each look's texture seemed richly tactile under the spotlight. And in the same way the "royal jelly" seems out of place but adds to the overall effect of the text, this sense of tangibility was augmented by Eckhaus and Latta's use of custom metal retainers and body paint.

Sending models and friends alike (including OC pals Le1F, Juliana Huxtable, and a purple painted India Menuez) down the runway to a score by Colin Self that oscillated between spoken sound pieces and an angelic cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry," the show achieved the goal expressed in the concluding line of the press release poem: "Trying to organize the fantasy."
