Spring in Seoul: New OC Men's Spring/Summer 2014

In the months since Opening Ceremony's incredible SPRING/SUMMER 2014 SHOW last September, I've started to learn Korean, which puts me in the perfect place to point out the nuances of the collection which hit stores this week. With its pojagi-like patterns and references to ancient Korean armor, the men's collection was inspired by historical customs from one of OC's favorite countries. Pojagi, by the way, is a traditional wrapping cloth that was pieced together with different scraps of fabric––similar to the patchwork blocking you see throughout the collection. On OC's sporty bomber jackets meanwhile, you'll also find asymmetrical panels that mimic the top of Korean formal dress, called hanbok. Bold color-block cargo pockets reference the skirting found on Korean armor. A bird pattern appears on swim trunks and shirts; the magpie is an important symbol in Korean superstitions. If you feel like you're in a time-warp, worry not. Slim-fitting suits, denim jackets, and oversized neoprene tops bring us back to 2014 from the Joseon dynasty. The result of this collection is that ancient has never felt so fresh.
