BITES ON A BUDGET is a toothsome and tasty series where members of the OC family forage for great food––under $10!
Salud describes itself as “a Latin take on organic.” Health-conscious and Mexican aren’t usually part of the same equation, so when my fellow blog interns Lina, Grace, and I decided to take a trip to Salud for our latest lunch excursion, we didn’t really know what to expect. I was gunning for their “No Flu For You!” juice ($6.50) with elderberry extract and ginger after reading about it online in my ongoing efforts to fight off a persistent cold. And we were all enticed by a comprehensive menu with a selection of gourmet sandwiches all under $10.
Located on Thompson Street, Salud shies away from the traditional Mexican decor and ambience that often abounds in restaurants serving fare from South of the border, instead opting for clean white walls with turquoise accents. The space is small and sparsely decorated, with two wooden tables, glass jars holding organic cookies and spicy (and delicious) Mole brownies, and a set of ceramic plaits adorned with portraits of Frida Kahlo.
At the recommendation of owner Eduardo Larios, I ordered the corn truffle quesadilla ($8.75) for an updated take on a classic Latin dish. I was fully prepared for something slathered in grease and oozing with cheese, but instead I was greeted by a beautifully plated homemade corn tortilla stuffed with huitlacoche truffles, black beans, and quesillo, and served with a side of chipotle mayo. Lina opted for the hearty "Avo" veggie wrap ($8.50) with avocado, tomato, lettuce, alfalfa sprouts, and olive oil, while Grace took advantage of Salud's brunch menu, ordering the chicken bacon, avocado, and egg wrap ($8.50). We lingered at Salud long after we'd cleaned our plates, thankful for both the lack of blasting Mariachi music and the delicious (and healthy) food.
