This London Collections: Men's fashion week, the lovely style blogger SUSIE BUBBLE reports, just for OC!
From his native Peckham in South London, witty young menswear designer Kit Neale continues his SE postcode journey and goes up the road to explore the ins and outs of Elephant and Castle for his latest collection. "We’re really sad that the shopping center at Elephant and Castle is being demolished and redeveloped, so this is an homage to the dated institute," he explained at his energetic presentation where models stood amidst plaster ruins depicting broken sand castles. For those that haven’t had the pleasure of driving around the famous roundabout or frequenting the lost relic of a shopping mall, Neale certainly made SE1 look a lot more exciting than the slightly grim reality. Elephants with castles on their backs were incorporated into the main urban jungle print, which clashed with another print derived from flora at the British Museum. The designer even spoke about a crusade to get this print into the lofty museum itself for Elephant and Castle’s posterity The swirling florals in monochrome greys or shades of red made for an refreshing take on camouflage. The rats that Neale and his team saw scuttling around the shopping centre were worked into a mousetrap print and sweatshirt motifs, and they even popped up as cute fluffy keyrings hanging off backpacks and jeans. Just another way of seeing the brighter side to London’s grittier parts. We wonder what tube stop Neale will get off at next season to mine for inspiration.
