Israeli-born artist Elad Lassry’s first show at 303 gallery in Chelsea takes us back to the pre-Internet days, when combing through an encyclopedia or reading a printed instruction manual was commonplace. Lassry raises images out of their original contexts, extracting them from textbooks, manuals, advertising, films, illustrated magazines, and commercial catalogues. He then alters them to create a more sculptural pieces. Over the last several years, the artist has established a body of work that dissects the essence of a photograph by changing its physical reality––something he achieves by drawing attention to the material attributes of the picture as an object.
For this exhibition, the artist partially encased some of his frames in 4-ply pleated sheets of silk. The result generates a feeling of nostalgia, like pulling a forgotten picture from the pocket of a satin shirt or out of the folds of a discarded prom dress. The show also conjures childhood memories of flipping through picture books with factoid-style portraits of porpoises, giraffes, chopped bell peppers, and beauty queens. Aside from the fabrics that conceal and drape over the images, many of the photographs themselves address tangibility and texture through a one-dimensional object, like a hand grasping a piece of fluffy cotton or a woman getting massaged.
