We$tside was in the house Monday night! T.D.E. (Top Dawg Entertainment) record label's very own Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, and newly signed artist SZA rocked the stage at the Vitamin Water #uncapped x Fader event, which OCNY's Patrick and I met up to witness. The LA-based label, whose roster also includes Jay Rock and Ab-Soul, may be one of the most exciting movements emerging from hip-hop today.
At the start of the night, DJ Green Lantern cranked out hits, including one of my favorites––Rich Homie Quan's "Type of Way," to an intimate crowd in Chelsea. Next, event host Miss Info emerged from backstage about thirty minutes in and greeted the crowd, which was anxiously waiting for the night's performances to begin.
First up was T.D.E.'s first lady and latest signee, SZA, who's been creating a buzz with her first two EPs See.SZA.Run and S. The New Jersey native serenaded the crowd with two songs, "Julia" and "Teen Spirit," and thanked everyone before passing the mic to her label-mate, Schoolboy Q. Q jumped right into performing tracks like "Bet I Got Some Weed", "My Hating Joint" and "Blessed". Not long after, he dropped a new single from his upcoming LP, Oxymoron, titled "Collard Greens." Suddenly, out of the blue, Kendrick Lamar surprised everyone by popping out for his verse [cue cheering from the crowd and iPhones in the air]. Later, Kendrick asked Q, "Can I get one in?" before delivering the hard-hitting "m.A.A.d. City" to an excited crowd.
After Kendrick finished his set, Schoolboy Q wrapped up the night with an upbeat rendition of "Yay Yay". See what went down in our snaps below.
