So Fast, So Furious: Opening Ceremony Spring/Summer 2014 at the SuperPier

Major doesn't even begin to cover it. OC's first-ever runway show happened last night and we're still reeling. Months of secret preparations culminated in twenty high-octane, turbo-fueled minutes. Filled with over 1,200 OC friends and family members, the enormous industrial SuperPier on New York's Hudson River provided the venue—the biggest of any show space this week—setting an epic tone for what was to come.

At around 8:30pm the lights dimmed. A minute passed and the sound of engines roared from rear of the space. Then an orange Lamborghini cruised into the venue (cue cheering, camera flashes, and an Instagram frenzy). The first model emerged from the car—wearing a pair of billowy patterned pants and clean-cut cross-over crepe top—and walked a lap of the space, followed by more girls emerging from a fleet of twenty Ferraris, Bentleys, and Porsches. Walking to floor-shaking sounds provided by DJ Ryan Hemsworth, the models showed off Opening Ceremony's Spring/Summer 2014 collection.

The collection was a love letter to New York, the city in which OC was born, a tribute to Carol's Korean background, and a nod to the street racing culture of suburban Los Angeles, where Carol and Humberto grew up. Heavy on ornate prints and bold silhouettes, it remixed traditional garments like Korean hanbok robes, magoja jackets, and baji pants with references from LA's drag racing underground. Swirled holographic prints and Asian floral motifs mingled on loose cargo shorts, voluminous perfecto jackets, and matching pants. Interspersed with pieces in solid lime leather, cornflower blue, and poppy red, the mix was pure energy.

Then came phase two. In tightly packed lines, a unit of "storm troopers" pounded into the space. In addition to Liu Wen, Lindsey Wixson, and Grace Mahary, they included boys wearing Opening Ceremony's spring menswear collection and fierce sci-fi helmets. It literally gave you chills. Stationed in between the cars, the models remained standing as the lights went up, and the audience was able to see the looks up close. The auto-heavy vibes of the collection were complemented by bags in cracked green and blue leather and sandals with colorful lucite heels. Photos snapped, we headed on to the after party.

A big, big thank you to all of our friends who helped make last night possible: Brian Molloy, Tom Pecheux, Anthony Turner, HK Media Group, Noah Shelley, Angus Monro, Broadway SuperCars/Nouri's Performance, Bumble and bumble, Esteé Lauder, Heartbeet Juicery, Motorola, OnStyle, Square, and Young Woo Associates/SuperPier.
