One morning, as the staff listened closely, OC owners-slash-Kenzo creative directors Carol and Humberto discussed their methods behind the Kenzo mania. The main question on everyone's mind: what were the influences this season for menswear? They were happy to explain!
Looking to the skies for inspiration, Carol and Humberto covered shirts, shoes, trousers, and more with bright precipitation and fluffy cumulus clouds. Longtime fans may recognize this piece of Kenzo history. "In the 1980s, Kenzo Takada had a cloud moment," Humberto said, "And we wanted to pay homage to it." From there, the idea expanded to include sky deities, who carried tigers as protection. Continuing the tiger theme from previous seasons, they turned the feline into a supernatural being, creating a print of snarling, floating guard cats they called "Flying Tiger." (Fun fact: The tiger, which has quickly become one of the signatures of Carol and Humberto's Kenzo reign, started rather inconspicuously. Takada used to put a tiny tiger silhouette in the waistband of pants, a signature that Carol and Humberto have taken next level.)
Another focus of this menswear collection is the tailoring. Kenzo is historically a major player in the suit game, and Carol and Humberto are maintaining that heritage with clouds and tigers flying across carefully tailored suits and dress shirts. "We turn everything inside out to look at the seams and make sure it looks perfect," Humberto explained. Attention to detail, bright prints, and superpowerful animals, what more could you want in a collection? How about an ethereal motorcycle gang video, directed by Partel Oliva?
