Fine Wine: Happy Birthday, Man Ray!

Photographer, sculptor, painter, surrealist, dadaist. Man Ray was a man of many talents. An original Williamsburg resident, Emmanuel Radnitzky spent most of his childhood growing up in one of our favorite Brooklyn neighborhoods before he became Man Ray (a moniker adapted from his nickname, Manny). The artist, described by friends throughout his life as a joker, experimented with assemblage, collage, film, and groundbreaking photography techniques in ways that were never short on humor. He even immortalized Hollywood actresses Ava Gardner and Catherine Deneuve in his avant-garde photography. "We cannot revive something that is alive, just as we cannot revive something that is dead," Man Ray once said about Dadaism. Today, on his 123rd birthday, his work is most certainly still living. Happy Birthday, Man Ray!
