Prior to Beyond Sushi, I thought vegan sushi would amount to your standard cucumber roll, where the sad little sesame seeds on the sticky white rice were the only source of flavor. But that opinion is now forever changed. Waiting in line, ELOISE picked up a freshly-squeezed watermelon and basil lemonade as we perused our options. My indecisiveness was at an all-time high, so while I was debating, Eloise settled on La Fiesta, a black rice roll stuffed with avocado, pickled jalapeño, chayote, and cilantro, topped with mango chili sauce. She also sampled a Sweet Angel rice paper wrap––all of it for $10.50.
Normally, I am a spicy tuna girl, so the Spicy Mang roll was calling my name. Before our eyes, black rice ("packed with 18 amino acids and rich in antioxidants, iron, zinc, and carotene") was spread in front of us on the wooden sushi roller, with heaps of avocado, mango, and cucumber. Topping them off were a spicy veggie slaw and little drops of toasted cayenne sauce. The roll was the most flavor-packed, satisfying sushi I have ever had (and only $6.50!). We split the black bean sweet potato brownie to celebrate how healthy we were, naturally.
