Following @MoMAPS1’s Twitter announcement that advanced tickets for Saturday afternoon’s Warm Up––which featured the likes of legendary DJ King Britt, born singer J.Cole, and Beyoncé hitmaker Bangladesh––had sold out and only a limited number would be available upon the door, things went from 0-to-Justin-Bieber-at-MSG in the blink of a retweet. And although first act Jubilee wasn't scheduled to take the stage until 3pm, the warning drew ticketless fans to line up even earlier than the 12pm doors. But the bedlam was all the better for up-and-coming Queens hip-hop collective World’s Fair, whose high-energy, lyrically explosive set left the hometown crowd glad they’d turned up so early.
Composed of Prince SAMO, Remy Banks, Lansky Jones, Nasty Nigel, Jeff Donna, and Cody B.Ware, the six-piece outfit draws upon their borough’s legendary legacy of coupling effortless lyricism with jazz samples and kickdrum loops à la Nas and A Tribe Called Quest. But that’s not to say the boys are trapped in a time warp; their bangers “Suspect" and "'96 Knicks” kept the jam-packed courtyard crowd mobbin' all afternoon, properly outfitted in the complementary do-rags and Fool's Gold foam fingers the guys tossed from on stage.
I caught up with the guys to discuss the best things about Queens, bucket hats, and of course, rap game Amanda Bynes. And check out the mixtape Nasty Nigel and DJ Thoth put together for us—a smooth blend of beats that features OC pals Brenmar, Kingdom, and Miguel. Keep scrolling!
