I've been waiting to watch Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmaster since the moment I heard that the film was happening. After leaving the theatre, I actually signed up for Wing Chun classes, and my fan-out for kung fu, WKW, and Tony Leung exploded into hyperdrive. The movie is not only romantic, beautiful, and action-packed, but also a chronological testament to kung fu today. The Grandmaster should be called simply, The Masterpiece.
Humberto Leon: Tony, The Grandmaster is a modern story in the sense that it chronologically captures the birth of kung fu as we know it today. I felt not only that it was a beautiful film, but also that it informed me. What did you take away from making this film?
Tony Leung: I have learnt a great deal from shooting this film—not only about the ancient wisdom of kung fu but also it has been a wonderful journey of discovery.
