Nan Goldin at QF Gallery, East Hampton

Kids in tutus bouncing on a trampoline, a fiery, red sun setting in the sky, a male couple embracing in a Parisian apartment. These images don't exactly scream Nan Goldin, but they are part of her latest exhibition, wish you were here, a hidden gem that sits on the first floor of a shingle-style house in East Hampton. Here, the photographer's intense shock-factor has receded, but the tender yet raw intimacy, characteristic of Goldin, lingers in her visual diary of recent summers in Sag Harbor and abroad.

In the saturated snapshots, subjects reveal themselves at vulnerable moments. Cookie Mueller, whose story is familiar to all Goldin fans (her husband died of AIDS before she herself did as well), makes a cameo with her son Max as they perch on a rainbow-colored indoor hammock in the most iconic––and oldest; it dates back to 1977––photograph in the exhibition. As Goldin grows older, her subjects seem to get younger, which makes sense if you think about it. Like Nan, those in her closest circles (her "tribe" as she calls it) have aged, and their offspring are now the focus. The violent, provocative beauty in her initial work that was documented in her seminal book, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1986), has calmed. A sense of sweet, innocent whim pervades, and fits comfortably with the summertime theme. In these photographs, which range from portraiture to landscape, Goldin shares more moments from her evolving, very public personal life.

Through August 18, 2013.
