This photo! When Corinne Day shot Kate Moss on an unmade bed with unmade hair in Vogue's now legendary bedsit story in 1993, Kate wore a "white cotton T-shirt" from Hanro at Harvey Nichols. Styled with a pair of £3.50 drugstore stockings, the T-shirt defined a moment. I mean, yes, Kate probably had something to do with it too, but this most democratic of garments signalled a new era of what became known as "dirty-realism"—the forerunner of "heroin chic." But every era since the arrival of the modern T-shirt, as part of U.S. Navy-issued uniforms during the late nineteenth century, has had its T-shirt star. Below take a look at Brigitte Bardot pioneering blue jeans and a white scoop neck Saint Tropez-style, Jane Birkin doing her thing in the early 70s, and Christy Turlington owning the baby tee.
