Weekend Live at Clocktower Gallery

Sweat, music, art, drinks, and friends make for a perfect New York summer night, and all of these things were in full effect Tuesday evening, for the Weekend’s album release party at Clocktower Gallery, a project headed by former MoMA PS1 director Alanna Heiss. On my way, I grabbed OCNY’s Kindall, and together we walked through Soho to our destination covertly tucked away in a 13-year-old building shrouded by scaffolding. We entered through a narrow hallway with doors on each side––some crudely padlocked and some left ajar. Overhead, the lights were flickering dramatically, and for a second it felt like we were on a scavenger hunt in some insane asylum.

The first room we visited was littered with ceramic objects, plastic water bottles, Alexander McQueen armadillo shoe knock-offs, WW2-style foxhole radios, and found objects assembled by artist Borden Capalino. The next space we ventured into was transformed by the disturbing and evocative vision of Brooklyn-based artist MV Carbon, titled Beyond the Dimensional Slope. Carbon's multidisciplinary approach includes pieces (from small clay animals to ceremonial headpieces) presented on wooden swings suspended from the ceiling. The bizarre presentation is topped off by colorful paint splatters along the walls and floors, with strange music echoing throughout.

After a little more wandering, we grabbed some beers and explored the main gallery space, which features sculptures and drawings by Jene Highstein. The exhibition focuses on a series of process-based, sculptural works from the early 1970s, including a recreation of Black Mound for Suzi, a massive boulder sculpture originally made for PS1. It was here that the San Francisco band played its highly anticipated set. The band delivered another extremely loud and even more rhythmically impressive act than their show at Northside Festival. After the set, we made our way to the roof for the final treat—Clocktower's spectacular view.

Through August 30, 2013. | Weekend’s new album Jinx is out now on Slumberland Records.
