For a London transplant like me, stuffy city life is something of the norm. But last week, as I roasted alive while waiting for the slowest G train ever, something inside of me snapped. It was time to go in search of white sands, ocean waves, and some R&R. Fire Island has been on my New York bucket list ever since I arrived here this summer. A 23-mile stretch of island adjacent to Long Island—complete with idyllic white beaches and its own national park, the Sunken Forest—it was exactly what I'd been frantically looking for.
So last weekend, I left the overbearing city behind and took a short train and ferry to Sailor's Haven, claimed to be the most serene location on the island. To make it to the beach, you must walk through meandering pathways inside the dreamlike Sunken Forest, which is semi-submerged in water. I could hardly believe I was a two-hour distance from Manhattan (let alone still in the state of New York!) as I lazed on the white sandy beach (mango margarita in hand) surrounded by dunes, wildlife, and stunning shrubbery.

Wouldn't be a trip to the beach without mint chocolate chip and strawberry ice cream...
