Since the early 1990s, photographer Wolfgang Tillmans has been creating images with the remarkable ability to feel relevant whether they were taken 10, 20, or two years ago. Selections from his four year project that started in 2008 and culminated with the Taschen publication Neue Welt in 2012 are now on display at Andrea Rosen Gallery in Chelsea. This body of work looks at the enormous political and economic changes that have significantly altered the world's appearance in recent years. The scenes depict everyday life across the globe, from US to Tasmania, and the Southernmost tip of Latin America. These photographs not only react to an increasingly globalized world, but also reveal Tillmans' desire to expose tenuous political and economic realities in these countries. The exhibition also includes a wall covered in 128 brightly colored pages of fruit-related consumption from his newest book FESPA Digital/ FRUIT LOGISTICA.
Tillmans' work is also concerned with the tools and machinery by which it is made. He has always appropriated new technologies (he used to make his prints on a standard commercial photocopier) and is highly interested in the growth of technology and how it has shaped the modern world. The most noticeable changes in this show are the sizes of the photographs, as well as new inkjet paper and ink, which give the pieces brilliant color and tangibility. Having made the obvious switch to utilize more digital technology, his ability to produce photographs that still feel handmade is astounding.
Through June 22, 2013.
