Amy Bessone & Betty Woodman at Salon 94

Currently on view at Salon 94 is Amy Bessone's In the Green Room, a show presenting a twist on the classic Greco-Roman female form. Bessone presents a body that is deformed rather than flawless: her paintings of female bodies depict extremities (hands, breasts, and feet) crammed onto the canvases. The works call to mind a battle. On one wall, a black-and-white vinyl print of a nude Venus, crowned by the phrase "Don't truncate me", hangs opposite a defiant ceramic fist. Along with her rebellious silkscreens displaying the same tagline and a few ceramics, the works are blatant objections against canonical representations of the female body.

Down the street, Betty Woodman's newest exhibition, Windows, Carpets, and Other Things, turns Salon 94 Freeman's into a ceramic wonderland. Vibrant vases greet you with their bright, splashy patterns. Household objects––like planters holding exotic bouquets and shapely vessels painted with Venus figures (a nice complement to Besson)––give way to window paintings, set in a space modeled after an interior courtyard.

The floor is decorated with Woodman's carpet pieces made of clay segments layered on top of a multicolored canvas, creating patterns reminiscent of Matisse's cut-out paintings. Along the walls, eye-catching ceramic pieces form a troupe of garden dancers. The result is a theatrical space of home and garden, where overgrown plants and pottery take on sprightly human forms.

Through June 14, 2013.
