'Gazing Ball': New Work by Jeff Koons

Leave it to Jeff Koons to take the most commonplace of objects and turn them into art. Gazing Ball is Koons' first show in New York since his presentation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2008. This new series consists of hand-blown blue glass balls that balance atop white plaster sculptures. "I wanted to show the affirmation, generosity, sense of place, and joy of the senses that the gazing ball symbolizes," Koons notes. And this is achieved: as you stand in front of the mirrored spherical objects (usually found scattered across suburban lawns), your sense of self in the space is warped and heightened and you become increasingly aware of the people around you. And many there were! Both gallery spaces were packed with eager attendees.

It’s hard to ignore (and for me, not to succumb to) the attractive colors and textural combinations of Koons’ work and this series, what with the juxtaposition of the mirrored electric blue balls with the dullness of the white plaster, is a testament to his unique expertise. Early attendees were privy (whether the gallery wanted them to be or not) to the installation of two pieces: a fantastic Frosty the Snowman lawn ornament sculpture and a series of letter boxes. So THAT’S how you install a Koons, eh?
