Remember the first time you saw James Franco in cornrows? The image is kind of burned into my mind, and for good reason. We have a sneaking suspicion that cornrows are on their way to being the look this summer, so we took the St. Petes-friendly style to our friend mischa g. at Bumble and Bumble, who showed us three new and easier-than-they-look ways to sport 'em. Check them all out here!

Perkins, before

Mischa preps Perkins' soft hair with a dry texture product or powder to make braiding easier. The less slippery the hair, the easier it will be! (Bumble & bumble Dry Spun Finish or Hair Powder does the trick.) Then, take a small section on the side of the head to start the first cornrow.

Divide that section of hair into three equal sections and start to braid.

A braid turns into a cornrow when you continue to incorporate the hair from the section into the braid, connecting it to the head. To do this, hold the two outer strands of your braid aside, and add some hair from the rest of the section to the middle strand so that you have three strands again, and keep braiding. (It doesn't have to be super tight!)

Braid all the way down to the end of the hair and secure with an elastic.

Repeat on the other side!

Part the remaining hair into three sections.

Create your next two cornrows above the previous ones, leaving your hair at the centermost part of your head unbraided, held out of the way by a clip. Create slightly larger sections as you move toward the top of the head.

Take the middle section and brush it straight back into a ponytail. Secure the section with a bungee or hair elastic.

Spilt the ponytail into two sections and twist loosely into figure-8 shapes.

Pin the figure-8 loops using bobby pins. They don't have to be perfect!

Arrange the four braids around the base of the twisted shape and pin in place.

Leave out the ends of the hair to create little flyaways.
