We've all been told "Do not touch!" when getting too close to the art in a museum or gallery. But Hold Tight, the current show at Ed Varie featuring the work of Los Angeles-based artist Augustus Thompson, invites exhibition-goers to break the rules for once––by walking all over the art.
Covered by a thin layer of laminate, Thompson's 30-plus digital prints, which feature stock images of Nike shoes, Chief Keef video stills, and iPhone photos, are placed in a rather disorganized fashion all over the floor. The arrangement replicates the one in his apartment and encourages guests to lean against the walls in order to better view the work, rather than keeping a "safe" distance from it.
The pieces in Hold Tight, which were created with an A3+ desktop printer, is a departure from what Thompson, a trained painter and sculptor, is known for. Much of the imagery is repeated throughout, causing you to feel like you're taking a surreal trip through the modern pop psyche.
