The occasions that get us to board the 6 train to the Upper East Side are rare––Tom Sachs' show at the Park Avenue Armory, or John McWhinnie's now shuttered rare bookstore and art gallery (rest his soul) are some examples. Rita Ackermann's current exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, Negative Muscle, is the most recent reason we've hopped on the Pelham Bay Park-bound subway. The Hungarian artist's series of abstract, sensual pieces on display resemble rounded, unconstrained human figures that simultaneously possess serenity and frenzied life energy. The majority of the pieces' large scale makes the works all the more stunning. The show takes its title from the very first painting Ackermann made following an intensive collaboration with Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine called Shadow Fux, an exhibition of jointly-made collages at the Swiss Institute of Contemporary Art in 2010.
