Bites on a Budget: $7.00 at Lam Zhou Handmade Noodle

BITES ON A BUDGET is a toothsome and tasty series where members of the OC family forage for great food––under $10!

This time of year means frigid, damp weather and a forecast that never fails to keep our eyes rolling. On one such disappointingly dreary day, I ventured to Chinatown in search of a table for one at Lam Zhou Handmade Noodle. Past the inconspicuous façade, you'll find a simple menu on the wall and a décor that is nothing to write home about. But if the smell wafting from the kitchen isn't enough motivation to take a seat, I don't know what is.

As the resounding slurp of noodles and banter of neighborhood locals filled the small room, I settled on the first item on the menu, the beef soup noodle ($5) to abolish my end-of-winter woes. Served in the dishes of the Chinese grandmother that I never had (and now know that I missed), the satisfyingly salty broth has your daily dose of sodium covered, while the doughy goodness of the noodles has handmade written all over them. With dollars left over, I dove into a plate of perfectly fried dumplings (8 for $2, 12 for $3) and proceeded to apply copious amounts of the chili sauce—a new staple in my kitchen. While we wait for springtime, nestle into this Chinatown hole-in-the-wall and get slurpin'!
