Catherine Opie at Regen Projects

Saturday night's opening at the new Regen Projects space in Hollywood celebrated the latest work of photographer Catherine Opie. The new exhibition features a series of landscapes and intimate portraits, including a particularly elegant one of Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy, donning contrasting black and white gowns. The images harken back to Opie's roots in documentary photography and reference formal composition found in 17th century portraiture, while the landscape photographs draw upon the early 20th century Pictorialist practice of transforming iconic scenery into blurred, abstract light drawings.

The opening reception was packed with guests eager to see Opie's new work—and maybe catch a glimpse of the elusive John Waters, who was reportedly in attendance (though he unfortunately evaded our photographer's lens). We also caught up with Opie and the Mulleavy sisters, who were excited to be a part of the exhibition.
