'Berlese Funnel' at White Box

Last Friday Berlese Funnel, a group show curated by Ana Garcia gathering works by Edouard Nardon, Evan Robarts, and Andrew Sutherland, opened at White Box. Struck by the sobriety and the elegance of the exhibition's pieces, I wanted to ask a few questions to the curator.

Alexandre Stipanovich: What was the idea behind this show?
Ana Garcia: Berlese Funnel calls attention to new interactions with forms and matter. Each artist’s distinct creative process, most evident in their use of materials, is combined with formalist elements to create or "funnel out" stimulating work.

AS: Would you agree that the show's abstract paintings and sculptures have a dark, raw, and austere aesthetic?
AG: Yes. The work is raw and honest, especially to the medium that is used. The artists do not resort to embellishment or color to entice the viewer, instead there is a sober use of line, composition, symmetry, and a minimal palette––this allows the observer to participate and dig within the shell, where the irony, sensuality, and mischief lurk.

Sutherland’s large sculpture, Untitled, possesses a David-esque contraposto that gives the work balance and a formal composition, yet in a playful Duchampian spirit, the object is re-appropriated. Visually, the heavy figure combines logic with uncertainty––a duality is also apparent in Nardon’s emotionally charged objects (carefully choreographed in space to form poetic visual contradictions) as well as in Robart’s juxtaposition of organic automatism (in his markings and the rigid rational order of the machine used to generate them).

AS: How do you think Edouard, Evan, and Andrew complement each other in this show?
AG: The three artists have an instinctual understanding of classical formal elements as well as a natural relationship with their materials. Their compositions are engaging and active within the space. They push and pull in relation to each other, while still sustaining individuality.
